East Meets West to focus on “Cross-Cultural Communication” Feb. 18–20

Asia 301: East Meets West [DIVR] [K] is a one-credit class and research symposium offered by the WSU Asia Program. Since themes and topics change, it can be taken up to three times for credit. Students will receive a letter grade based on attendance and the quality of two brief required papers (précis) due in early April.

This semester’s theme is “Cross-Cultural Communication: Possibilities and Challenges.” Course activities will be held Thursday and Friday, Feb. 18 and 19, from 6:00 to 9:15 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Joshua Garvison named Outstanding Senior

Congratulations to Joshua Garvison of Tumwater, who has been named the College of Arts and Sciences’ 2015 Outstanding Senior in Asian Studies.

Joshua came to WSU several years after first studying in Oregon, moving to Virginia, and making plans to enlist in the US Air Force. However, he decided to return to his home state of Washington and enroll at WSU and its branch of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). “These two decisions were the best I have made in my life,” he said.

Asia 301: East Meets West [DIVR] [K] is a one-credit class and research symposium offered by the WSU Asia Program. Since themes and topics change, it can be taken up to three times for credit.

Kaitlin McRae named Outstanding Senior

Congratulations to Kaitlin McRae from Spanaway, who has been named the College of Arts and Sciences’ 2014 Outstanding Senior in Asian Studies.

Kaitlin first visited the WSU Pullman campus as a youngster in the Cougar Quest summer camp and, later, as part of the Future Cougars of Color program for high school students. She received a Future Cougars of Color scholarship and began studying civil engineering, but soon found that Asian studies was a better fit for her.

Kaitlin is a cadet in the WSU Air Force ROTC and was recognized with the Silver Valor Award and the Meritorious Service Award. Following her military activation in … » More …

Nikki Brueggeman named Outstanding Senior

Congratulations to Nikki Brueggeman, who has been named the College of Arts and Sciences’ 2013 Outstanding Senior in Asian Studies.

Nikki’s adoptive mother, who is blind, taught her not to let setbacks keep her from doing the things that mattered. Originally from Walla Walla, Washington, Nikki has served as a legislative intern in Washington, D.C., and studied abroad in Osaka, Japan.

Nikki is past president of the Black Student Union and chaired the Council of Multicultural Student Presidents and the Scott-Coman Residence Hall Improvement Committee. She has been a member of the ASWSU Services and Activity Fees … » More …
